From the major cities of the south coast to the UK's only coastal national park, South Wales has plenty to offer any sea-lover. Swansea is a lively maritime city with an excellent beach and easy access to the Gower, a fifteen-mile-long peninsula with some of the best beaches in Wales and good opportunities for surfing and windsurfing.

Broughton Bay is a large, sandy bay, backed by dunes, on the north-western tip of the Gower Peninsula. The sands here are constantly shifting and a number of interesting discoveries have been made here by beachcombers, including a recent find of the handle of a 17th century sword. There is evidence that the caves around the cliffs at the northern end of the bay were occupied by Palaeolithic man, as well as by Roman settlers.

Blue Pool Bay is one of the Gower Peninsula’s prettiest bays and also one of the quietest. This is thanks to the fact it can only be reached on foot from Broughton just under a mile away. The bay at Blue Pool is like a rocky bite out of the coastline which has been filled by a stretch of pristine golden sand. The name of the beach comes from a supersized rock pool (about 15ft across) on the eastern side of the bay.

Rhossili Bay Beach. This Welsh wonder sits right at the top of the tree. It set the pace in 1956 as part of the country’s inaugural Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This three-mile stretch of sand has played host to several TV series, with Doctor Who one of the most famous to use its stunning shoreline. The beach reaches its pinnacle when the tide recedes to reveal a glistening golden terrain. You’ll see seals basking in the glory alongside the historical remains of the Helvetia, a Norwegian ship that's been wrecked on the sand since 1887. An island also reveals itself at low tide. The aptly named Worm’s Head Island is great for an adventure.
