From CTOs and VPs of engineering to product leaders, they all express a similar concern: while they can measure velocity, story points, or alignment to the roadmap, controlling organizational outcomes remains elusive.

In conversations with product leaders, the focus is often on task completion and timely delivery. However, a successful business thrives on outcomes. Surprisingly, many product and engineering teams do not prioritize planning or measuring these results. Often, product leaders feel constrained, citing a lack of sales data, thus resorting to focusing solely on execution.

This disconnect is what I call the Grand Canyon between strategy and execution. Instead of allowing this gap to persist, we must bridge it by aligning teams around shared objectives. Despite uncertainties in sales numbers or customer retention predictions, by linking key metrics to strategic goals, organizations can work cohesively toward common outcomes.

Observing successful, growing companies, a trend emerges: effective collaboration across teams ensures everyone moves in the same direction. Accountability is essential, and it lies with both product and strategic leaders to integrate efforts, predict outcomes, and measure success accurately.

In the age of AI, we possess tools to analyze data comprehensively, connect dots, and forecast outcomes with accuracy. Leaders in engineering, product, sales, and strategy should demand this connected approach to foster business growth.
