Ryan Carson from Carson Law is joined by John Krasevec from Edward Jones to discuss the ins and outs of the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP).

An RDSP is a savings plan intended for people with disabilities who are approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) save for the future and provide long-term financial security.

· What does someone need to qualify for an RDSP?
→ You must be a Canadian resident, have a SIN, and already be receiving the disability tax credit

· How would someone set up an RDSP?

· How can Canadians use the RDSP to build long-term financial stability?
→ There is up to $90,000 worth of government grants available over the lifetime of an individual, plus a $200,000 lifetime contribution limit. Depending on the situation, there is availability to build wealth. The RDSP is tax-deferred growth. For an individual who qualifies for the Ontario Disability Support Payments (ODSP), the RDSP does not impact the income test or the asset test towards the ODSP payments.

· How does the RDSP work in complement of items like the Henson Trust?
→ It is always important to have proper estate planning when it comes to any level of wealth.

80-85% of eligible individuals are not taking advantage of this program. All you can do at the end of the day is submit the paperwork to see if you qualify. If you feel there are too many channels of information, don't give up!
