If we truly believe in the scriptures, then we must know that the sole purpose of lives of Sages/ Rishi’s, Kings and noble souls like Gods, demi-gods, Devata Gandharva’s, Yaksha’s who had the power to give boons or curse wasn’t really to give boons or curse people. The purpose of their lives was to attain the grace of their “Ishta Deva

From the story of Vishwaamitra, Ahilya, Pareekshita, the pent up merits of the sages were fearsome for Gods. The accrued merits of sages due to their penance endangered the Gods, because in terms of accrued these sages could equal them and challenge the divinity levels of some of these Gods. Gods initiated sabotage directly or indirectly in order to disrupt the process of penance either by sending damsels from the heavens or due to the natural occurrences around which disturbed the tranquility of these sages. One must know the story of Vishwaamitra to learn what it takes to earn puNya which helps one to be able to either give boons or curse.

Vishwaamitra was a Kshatriya King. He had been hunting in the forest where Brahma Rishi Vashishtha lived in his hermitage. He chanced upon meeting Vashishtha and saluted him. Vashishtha called upon his cow which was capable of giving out everything that Vashishtha wished for. Vashishtha asked for eatables and beverages for the King and his people and the cow did her master’s bidding. Vishwaamitra was amazed by the cow and asked the sage to give him that cow. Vashishtha who had gotten that divine cow through penance refused to give her to him. Vishwaamitra was enraged and ordered his army to attack the hermitage and secure the cow. The soldiers immediately pulled the cow away. The cow easily put flight the soldiers and sought refuge at the feet of the sage. The sage asked her to bring forth soldiers to resist Vishwaamitra’s men. So it did.

Vishwaamitra was amazed by the resistance offered by the army produced by the ambrosial cow called Sabala belonging to Brahma Rishi Vashishtha to his own army. He lost several of his sons in the battle with Vashishtha’s army. Defeated he went to the Himalayas after making one of his sons the king, performed severe penance unto Shiva and obtained all divine astra’s. Then he again attacked Vashishtha burning his hermitage into cinders. Sage Vashishtha regretted the burning of the ashrama and put his BrahmadanDa in front of him and sat. Vishwaamitra shot all his divine weapons on Sage Vashishtha but was dumbfounded to see the staff swallowing all the astra’s. In reality, the divine merit earned by Sage Vashishtha was being used to thwart the attack of the Vishwaamitra and the divine merit earned by Vishwaamitra was being used up futilely.

Vishwaamitra realising that only strict austerities will help him become a Brahma Rishi, went back to perform penance even more severely and became a Rishi through his Tapasyaa. He wanted to become a Brahma rishi. He went back and started performing penance once again. Indra fearing that this Sage who could create an alternate universe for Trishanku could be a dangerous challenge to the Gods, sent Menaka - the celestial dancer to enamour and seduce him out of his austerities. She was successful, but after a while he realised that the company of women was not why he was out. He went back to performing rigorous austerities and became a Maharshi. Dissatisfied and unswayed by his determination to equal Vashishtha he performed even more severe penance. This time, Indra sent Rambha another damsel to do the same act of seduction to Vishwaamitra. This time Vishwaamitra cursed Rambhaa to become a stone for ten thousand years. This curse used up a part of his puNya.

Just like a student has to work hard to earn his marks, secure a degree or may be a post graduate degree or prepare a thesis or do something worthwhile to get a doctorate, one perhaps needs to earn enough merit/ puNya to be able to boon or curse.

The puNya is believed to help the soul post death to escape the cycle of life and earn a life at the heavenly abode.

A blessing given by a mother to her child with all her love and devotion can perhaps help the child to endeavour independently and give him/ her courage to face a testing time and come out with flying colours. Can you think of earning her curse? If not, then better wish not to curse anyone else either.
Curses never go away when a person who cursed dies.

God’s intervention in human affairs is very rare.
