On this 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Bishop John Dolan reflects on “Domine quo Vadis,” an early 1600’s painting by the Italian Baroque artist, Annibale Carracci, in this week’s episode of Word and Art, in which he connects a Sunday reading with a famous work of art.

Bishop John reflects on the painting featuring Peter fleeing Rome to avoid execution and his encounter with the risen Lord along the way. The resurrected Christ is portrayed with His crown of thorns, pierced hands, feet and side and He carries His cross, reminding us of the call to take up our cross each day, to die to ourselves and to follow Him along the way.

Bishop John brings an exciting and insightful perspective to the series as he earned a Master of Arts degree in Liturgy/Church Art and Architecture from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, Calif.
