In 1843, 16-year-old maid Grace (Sarah Gadon) was sentenced to life imprisonment for participating in the murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery. Years later, psychologist Simon Jordan comes to the prison to have in-depth conversations with her to prove her mental state. With their conversations as the clue, the series switches between the dual images of "innocent and obedient" and "hidden sharpness" through Grace's memories and narratives — she sometimes describes the hardships of women at the bottom, and sometimes avoids key details of the case, leaving the truth always shrouded in mystery.
Sarah Gadon interprets the complexity of the character with layered acting. The series integrates suspenseful narrative with feminist thinking, not only restoring the social class differences in the 19th century but also exploring the propositions of trauma, memory and identity, becoming a classic with both suspenseful tension and ideological depth.
