If you’re like me, or one of the other 44 million student loan borrowers, you’ve probably asked the question how do I refinance my student loans?

Unfortunately, most websites simply recommend student loan refinancing companies and don’t really outline what’s involved in the process itself. In this video I’ll actually tell you how to refinance student loans.

Here are the 8 steps that are usually involved with refinancing your student loans.

Step 1. Find all your current student student loan payoff statements.
Step 2. Gather your key financial documents like your paystubs, rent history, social security number, employer info, photo i.d. And tax returns.
Step 3. Scan or download your college transcript or diploma.
Step 4. Have Co-Signer personal info ready if you plan to have a cosigner; you may also need a personal reference so get that ready too.
Step 5. Start the first application with a reputable company (Like Credible, SoFi, Laurel Road, etc).
Step 6. Get ready to be denied at first. Don’t worry, that’s common and we’ll talk about that in a second.
Step 7. Add Co-Signer if needed. Have Co-Signer log in and verify their info and income.
Step 8. Wait about 24-72 hours for approval and choose your loan terms
When I decided to refinance my student loans, I hopped onto Credible because I like their platform for finding lenders who are fighting to get your business.

The first 7 steps took only about an hour. It was pretty easy - all I had to was to locate a few documents and scan/upload them to my computer.

Here are the items I had to locate:
Drivers License
College Transcripts and physical Diploma
Paystub and Tax Returns
Professional License as a Physical Therapist (if you're in a healthcare field)
Current Student Loan Payoff Statement
A Personal Reference and their Contact Info
And a Cosigner’s Basic Info: Name, Address, Phone, Email

If you decide to add a cosigner, it will make the process longer because the cosigner will have to log in, put their income and personal information into the website and submit the application. In the end, I did not go with a cosigner but wanted to see if there was any difference if I applied with my spouse as a cosigner.
