Every year, the Gwal-Bal (young men) from Nandgaon arrive in Barsana fully prepared, carrying shields and singing joyfully, soaked in colors and devotion. On the other side, the women of Barsana — symbolizing Radha Rani’s sakhis and gopis — wait with strong wooden sticks (lathis) in their hands.

As soon as the celebration begins, the air fills with excitement — thak thak thak! The rhythmic sound of sticks striking the shields creates a magical scene. The men try to protect themselves while laughing, dancing, and surrendering to the playful devotion of love.

This is not violence — this is symbolic love, devotion, surrender, and spiritual joy.
It represents the divine play of Radha and Krishna, where every strike carries affection, every laugh carries faith, and every color carries blessings.
