Yes, I know it would’ve made more sense to cover Somewhere in Time as synth pop but I felt that would’ve been rather too obvious. Also, as with The Drone Factor previously, I like taking on under-appreciated Maiden albums rather than ones widely accepted as classics, and of all the classic-era (1980-1992) releases no other album is as widely disliked as No Prayer for the Dying. Whether it’s the production or the “evil Bruce” vocals, people have found much to complain about it over the years.

Not me. I love this album and always have. Hot take: it is actually the last truly classic Iron Maiden album and one of the reasons is because it still adheres to the vinyl format; the songs are short and punchy and never get boring. And while the production admittedly is a bit rough, the band are on fire.

So why synth pop? Well, the idea simply popped into my head one day in April 2023 and I ran with it until the whole album was done. The approach was initially the same as with The Drone Factor, ie. quick and to the point. Don’t overthink it, just do it. Same sounds for every song, cheap and cheerful AI art for graphics etc.

It didn’t quite work out that way.

Singing the Blaze-era songs, while not in any way easy, was a cakewalk compared to this project. I had to take some liberties with the melodies and transpose quite a few songs to get them done and as you will hear as the album unfolds, there were some songs that didn’t work out that great, vocally. I also had mixed feelings about including the last song but in the end felt it had to be the full album or nothing.

But let me be absolutely clear about this: No Synth Pop for the Dying is no piss-take. It’s a labour of love.
