Gamelan Gita Asmara began as a student ensemble at UBC in 1996 into an independent organization with non-profit status.It is modeled after traditional Balinense seka gong, or misic clubs, of which there are thousands throughout the island of Bali, meeting in community centers and using village-owned instruments.
