Strumming for Beginners | Part 1: How to Strum Your Ukulele

If strumming is your top challenge on the ukulele, you are not alone! It is the number one thing my students come to me with, and through teaching my beginner group classes and private lessons, I've put together this method of learning strumming that builds a strong foundation in rhythm, to help you be a more confident player. Check out the time stamps below to jump around as needed!

Strumming involves both the physical aspect, and the mental aspect. How do you physically strum? Which fingers do you use? And once you've got that down, what rhythms do you strum, and how on earth do you count? (Definitely saving the wine til the very end so we can focus!!)

In this 6-part series, Strumming for Beginners, I take you through how to physically strum, how to count and approach rhythm, as well as 6 basic strumming patterns, starting from very basic all the way to learning the most popular ukulele strumming pattern, also known as the Island Strum.

We'll also apply all 6 strumming patterns to the folk song "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain."
