Vestibular Rehabilitation is an effective system to treat

1) Benign Positional Vertigo ( BPV)
2) Vestibular Loss
3) Post-Concussion Symptoms

A) BPV usually creates a sense that the room is "spinning around you" and the symptoms are usually brought on by positional changes. (such as turning in bed to one side or looking up to one side) One can experience other associated symptoms such as nausea and loss of balance. However, if it is BPV, the symptoms should subside within one minute.
BPV is usually due to the tiny crystals (Otolith) escaping from the Utricle into the Semi-circular Canal. In the clinic, we can identify which canal is involved by doing various movements and observing the directions of the nystagmus from the eye. Then we can apply the appropriate maneuvers to correct this. Usually, only 1-2 sessions of Vestibular Rehab is needed to correct the BPV as long as the accurate canal is identified. We would suggest you sleep with the pillow propped up for 2 days to discourage the crystals from going back into the canal.

B)Vestibular Loss - some patients suffer vertigo due to damages to the vestibular apparatus. (e.g. Meniere's disease) If this damage is permanent, the body will likely experience vertigo & dizziness with various tasks in daily life. We can prescribe the appropriate exercises such as eye-tracking and habituation exercises to help the body adapt and compensate to improve function.

c)Dizziness and other symptoms can occur after concussion injuries.
We can utilize various vestibular exercises to help the body recover and compensate. Most of the time, post-concussion symptoms are not permanent and people usually recover fully.

It is highly recommended that you seek professionals who are specialized in vestibular rehabilitation to accurately diagnose your situation and apply the proper treatment techniques. If the incorrect techniques are applied, you can experience more symptoms.
