Move over oil companies—tech is where the money's at in 2012. Apple has become the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.

At a market value of $418 billion, the company even surpassed Exxon after a stunning quarter that reported a 73 percent jump in sales to $46.3 billion. During that time, Apple doubled iPad sales to 15.4 million units, moved 15.4 million iPods, 5.2 million Macs, and a whopping 37 million iPhones—twice the number sold the same period a year ago. All of this contributes to the roughly $97 billion in cash and securities that Apple has on hand.

Tech blog Gizmodo humorously put that in perspective, noting that, "If you stack every single dollar bill in Apple's $97 billion cash reserves, you would reach 6,583 miles into space. That's about 32 times the altitude of the International Space Station."
