We’ve all heard of 5G, but what is it actually and how is it supposed to make our lives easier?

Basically, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile connectivity, which will replace the 4G connectivity on our phones. 5G has been official for the past year, and won’t start rolling out immediately — but this hasn’t stopped experts, mobile providers, and tech companies from speculating how it will change our internet experience.

Compared to 4G LTE, 5G is expected to be 30 to 50 times faster, which would cut down the time it conventionally takes to download stuff on the internet to mere seconds. Data will also download and stream in higher capacities, which will mean streaming services would no longer crash. It is also supposed to be more power-efficient, so devices will last longer on a charge. However, all of these amazing promises should be taken with a grain of salt, as advertised network speeds are usually heavily hyped.

5G is expected to be fully implemented by U.S. carriers by 2020, but this may be a lofty goal, considering a whole infrastructure needs to be built nationwide. Regardless, it’s good to know that even faster speeds are on the horizon.
