In this first part of our Travel by Dart: Greece series, I explore the country where ancient history collides with modern magic. I start in Athens, discovering the world's oldest neighbourhood - Plaka (inhabited the longest), uncovering the stories behind the Acropolis, the mighty Parthenon, and even why the city is called Athens. My stay at the stylish Gem Society boutique hotel turns delicious when I learn to cook shrimp orzo, then I dive into an olive oil tasting experience at Met des Oliviers.
The road then takes me to Delphi, once the spiritual center of the world. I walk the ruins of Apollo’s Temple, hear the legends of the Oracle, and soak in ancient wisdom (and sunshine).
From there, it’s off to Thessaloniki where I explore the White Tower, uncover dark tourism stories about ancient prisons, ruined churches, and the tragic past of the Hippodrome. I recharge with a visit to Ktima Gerovassiliou, one of the best wineries in the country, where I taste the rare and indigenous Malagousia grape.
Finally, I end Part 1 in the peaceful Thassos Island, landing in the quaint village of Skala Maries, setting the stage for Part 2 — where Crete awaits.
🔔 This is Travel by Dart. A documentary travel series where I throw a dart at the world map and go wherever it lands.
➡️ In Part 2: I dive into Crete, explore hidden beaches, ancient palaces, and cook with locals.

Hope you like this Greece travel guide and tips. Here is a little more about the places and things we covered in our documentary:
Dark Tourism in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki holds a layered, often somber past that makes it a compelling destination for dark tourism. The White Tower, a symbol of the city today, was once a notorious prison and site of executions during Ottoman rule. Nearby, the Crypt of Agios Demetrios holds chilling relics of early Christian martyrdom, while the Yeni Mosque and Jewish Museum document the near-erasure of Thessaloniki's once-thriving Jewish population during WWII. The remnants of the old prison of Eptapyrgio, in the Upper Town, whisper stories of torture and repression under both Ottoman and modern dictatorships.
Delphi – The “World’s Belly Button”
In ancient Greece, Delphi was believed to be the navel of the world, or omphalos, the point where the two eagles released by Zeus met, marking it as the center of the universe. Perched on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the Sanctuary of Apollo was home to the famous Oracle, whose cryptic prophecies shaped wars and empires. Delphi wasn’t just a religious site—it was a cultural hub where art, athletics, and politics converged. Even today, its sacred ruins and mountainous setting evoke the mystique that once drew pilgrims from every corner of the ancient world.
Thassos – The Emerald Island of the North
Thassos, known as the "Emerald Island" of the Aegean, is famed for its lush pine forests, marble quarries, and ancient ruins. Once a wealthy city-state, Thassos thrived on gold mining and trade in antiquity. Visitors can explore the ruins of the Ancient Agora, the Ancient Theater, and the Acropolis of Thassos, all bearing witness to a rich Greco-Roman past. Beyond its archaeological treasures, Thassos offers a slower, more authentic Greek island experience—far from the tourist crowds yet steeped in history and myth.
