Today it’s the 18th June and we are back at the Brockholes bird reserve, next to the M6 at Preston.
The birds we are looking at are two Coot parents with their chick.
This black-feathered water bird is often mistaken for a duck—but it’s not! It’s more closely related to cranes and rails.
Adult coots have black or dark charcoal-coloured feathers with obvious white beaks and a white colouration patch above the beak. They have piercing red eyes.
Juveniles tend to have brownish-black fluffy feathers.
The Coot looks very graceful on the water. They are expert divers – they often seem to dive below the surface like feathered submarines.
They play a big role in wetland ecosystems, as they eat aquatic plants, algae, and insects.
The Coot help to keep the water clean and free from excessive vegetation.
On land, they are slightly ungainly; as they have lobed feet (not webbed feet) and the feet are near the back of their body.
Feet like theirs are great for walking on soft vegetation and swimming, but less good for walking.
Coots can be very territorial and defensive of their young. That said, if food is scarce or a chick is not thriving; they may show some very tough love.
Coot parents may abandon or peck a poorly chick so they can concentrate on feeding any remaining healthy chicks.
We can see here that the two adults are showing their one remaining chick how to feed and how to dive.
Coots are not the rarest wetland bird in the world, but they are very entertaining to watch. They are a regular sight here at Brockholes.
