Reliability of thermowell is critical to ensuring safe plant operation and control. Cracking of thermowells causing by Flow Induced Vibration (FIV) has been responsible for plant failures and equipment damage. Due to the complexity of interacting wakes, the potential for lock-in between vortex shedding and structural frequencies, it can be extremely challenging to predict and remediate FIV.

Fully coupled Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations using coupled CFD and FEA models allows the calculation of stresses and displacements under complex transient fluid loadings. Performing these simulation requires high fidelity CFD and FEA modelling tools but provides the opportunity to document and mitigate the risk of these failures.
