Amdavad, is the most populous city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the administrative headquarters of the Ahmedabad district and the seat of the Gujarat High Court. Ahmedabad's population of 5,570,585 (per the 2011 population census) makes it the fifth-most populous city in India, and the encompassing urban agglomeration population was estimated at 8,854,444 (as of 2024) is the seventh-most populous in India. Ahmedabad is located near the banks of the Sabarmati River, 25 km (16 mi) from the capital of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, also known as its twin city.
Ahmedabad has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under the Government of India's flagship Smart Cities Mission. In July 2017, the historic city of Ahmedabad, or Old Ahmedabad, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage City.
Teen Darwaza is a historical gateway on the east of Bhadra Fort, Ahmedabad, India. Completed in 1415, it is associated with historical as well as legendary events. The gates are featured in the logo of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
The Teen Darwaza was an exit from the Bhadra Fort to the east. The gate has three arches, which lead into a large enclosure, which formerly formed the outer courtyard of the palace, the Maidan Shah, with a fountain and a raised terrace in the middle. The road in the central opening is 17 feet wide, and each side arch is 13 feet wide. It has highly decorated backs on the faces of the pillars between the arches. The arches are twenty-five feet high. The terrace above the gate was formerly roofed. But in 1877 the gate was repaired and the terrace opened. Here large feudatories or foreign embassies assembled, and before approaching the presence, the sovereign, who was enthroned on the terrace, summoned the army for war ventures and gala-day reviews, or gathered in court in the cool of the evening near the gushing fountain. Now the area is a busy market.
