After the Chimer arrived in the northeastern part of Tamriel they were greeted my the native race of Mer that already lived there. The Dwemer. This technologically advanced race mocked the Chimer for their - in the Dwemer's eyes irrational - worship of Daedra. The Dwemer weren't atheists, they did believe in the Aedra and Daedra but unlike the other races of Tamriel they believed it was more important to surpass the Gods rather than worship them.
This lead to several conflicts with the religious Chimer, since they worshipped the three Daedric princes Azura, Mephala and Boethiah. For years they battle for the dominion over Morrowind until they encountered a common enemy: The Nords of Skyrim.
In the beginning the Nords were able to conquer the land due to the many conflicts between the Mer. But then their leaders Nerevar (Chimer) and Dumac (Dwemer) agreed to keep peace and join forces to drive the Nords out of Morrowind. The country was then called Resdayn.
After defeating the Nords however the two factions soon began fighting each other again.
The Dwemer wanted to use the Heart of Lorkhan which was located inside the Red Mountain to construct a God of their own called The Numidium.
The final battle became know as the Battle of Red Mountain. Here the Dwemer king was slain and in desperation his chief engineer used three magical tool on the Heart. At this moment all the Dwemer disappiared.
Later three trusted advisors of Nerevar betrayed him and used the Heart to ascend themselves to godhood. For their betrayal Azura cursed them and from then on their skin was gray like the ash of the Red Mountain that erupted soon after as punishment and so the Chimer were called Dunmer or Darkelves. Azura also foretold the reincarnation of Nerevar who will one day take revenge on the three living Gods.
