Описание к видео Cecil Burleigh: Indian Summer, Op.27 No.4

Phillip Sear plays the fourth piece from a 1916 set of seven sketches—'Sonnets of Autumn'—by the long-lived American composer and violinist Cecil Burleigh (1885-1980).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cecil Burleigh studied at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory in Berlin, and in the USA, with (inter alia) Felix Borowski (composer of 'Adoration'). Later, he studied composition with Ernest Bloch and violin with Leopold Auer (no less) in New York. He made his career as a teacher at the University of Wisconsin. He wrote symphonies, concertos and many smaller-scale works. You can read more about him here: https://tinyurl.com/to4hgz2 .

Much of Burleigh's music of the period, this owes a lot to Edward MacDowell, and one could almost say that he wrote the music that MacDowell himself might have written had he lived longer.

An Indian summer is a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. It is usually associated with a calm spell of weather after the first hard frost. The piece is prefaced by the first verse of a sonnet by Henry Jerome Stockard (see below):

“Fair, fugitive, and few autumnal days
That hint of pleasures vanished long ago!
Beneath the alders leaf-clogged streamlets flow;
Upon the moorland shimmer genial rays.
The distant hills are swathed in dreamy haze;
Along the meadows faintest zephyrs blow;
The death-tuned insects chant their dirges low,
For joy again is in the world's wide ways.”

“Henry Jerome Stockard (1858-1914) was a poet and educator from North Carolina. He was born in Chatham County and descended from Scottish immigrants. He attended Graham High School, The University of North Carolina, and Elon College. Stockard taught English, political science, and Latin at various institutions, including Fredericksburg College, Peace Institute, and The University of North Carolina.. He was hailed as the unofficial poet laureate of North Carolina and was often asked to compose poems for ceremonies.” Source: Conversation with Bing, 3/31/2023 (edited).
