About the Guest & Episode:
Jammu, city of temples is a self produced documentary series initiative by Pausecast hosted by Tanvi Mahajan where we are going to explore the rich culture, history & nature of Jammu & Kashmir.
For the first episode, we came to Jammu's one of the oldest temple Panjbaktar Temple also knows as Sikke/Rupee Vala Mandir in the heart of Jammu.
Suresh Sharma; Judge of Highcourt & the supervisor of Panjbaktar sat down with us & let us know about the significant history & tales of this temples.
According to him,
One of the Vedas is also written in this temple in the ancient history.
He told about the Gurunanak dev ji's visit to this temple & mediate under the tree.
Maharaja Pratap Singh's Dastar Bandi also happened in this temple
Jammu, the Dogra heartland has always been a Sanatan stronghold.
A little about the amazing Panjvaktra Mandir these Gurukul shishyas belong to :
One of the oldest Shiva Mandir in #Jammu Panjvaktra/Shivalaya is also known as Rupaye wala mandir. The story behind the silver coins on the Mandir floor is a testimony to the Dogra Kings who resisted full British control over their vast frontier Kingdom.
For the second #Dogra Jamwal King Maharaja Pratap Singh, Walter Lawrence, a British historian noted that Maharaja Pratap Singh’s kindness to all classes of the public in Kashmir, regardless of their birth, has won him the affection of his subjects.
British wanted full control of geo-politically strategic state but the Dogra Maharajas were not prepared to give up their sovereignty. In 1889 they deposed a childless Maharaja Pratap Singh blaming him for associating with the Russians against them, to neutralise his authority.
Though later his position was restored as the allegations could not be proven it did put him through a lot of humiliation. His powers were also curtailed.
According to oral history it is around this time Maharaja Pratap Singh ordered the coins with images of Queen Victoria & King Edward VII to be laid on the Mandir floor. Devotees who come to the Mandir walk over these coins. Over time many coins have been extracted by greedy hoarders.
Maharaja Pratap Singh never forgot this British conspiracy & the British coins with their sovereigns on the Mandir floor was a reflection of that. In today’s lingo it could be said such was the swag of #Dogra Maharajas who were religious, builder of Temples & good administrators.
