Описание к видео Will the Wolf Survive? - Los Lobos (play-along for guitar)

This is a screen-capture video from a TuneLing for "Will the Wolf Survive?" from the album "How Will the Wolf Survive?", by Los Lobos.

This song is also available in a separate TuneLing video for ukulele!

Notes:

Los Lobos is not only a unique band, they're very, very special, and frankly, a national treasure. Their mastery of Mexican music of many styles, blended with the gritty rock-and-roll and blues of the Los Angeles scene, is something beautiful. They've been at it for close to a half-century, and they're still going strong.

This song is the closer from their major label debut album, released in 1984, and serves as a fine introduction for the uninitiated. The Mexican musical influence is subtle in this one, appearing in some of the instrumentation, but more so in the soulful vocals, which are a hallmark of everything Los Lobos does.

It's not a complicated song, but we have some notes for both the ukulele and guitar players out there...

The drum fill that leads into the intro starts on the second beat of the prior ("pickup") bar, not the first, which is unusual but not problematic. The visuals will guide you.

There's exactly one F chord, in bar 67. Not an error - it's lonely, but correct.

There's exactly one C9 chord, in bar 76. This one could easily just be a plain C, but we added the 9th to "thicken up" the chord a bit, matching that part of the recording, where there's a bit of a swell right there.

Finally, there's a set of lovely melodic guitar riffs that are the meat of the intro, the Link section, and the main part of the Coda. The right way to handle these is to have a whole guitar player devoted to them, in addition to a rhythm guitar player. But for you solo players, we do indicate the notes played in these licks, in the upper right corner of the screen. If this is a challenge for you, relax! Start by learning the chords of the song, ignoring the riffs. If you then want to incorporate some or all of the riffs, you'll want to slow the video down to start. Then, note that the true chords are showing in red, and the orange dots appearing between the chords are the single notes of the riffs. It'll take some work to be comfortable playing those licks and chords at the same time, but you can simplify if you like, and just play whatever sounds good and is manageable under your hands. (Not playing the riffs at all is TOTALLY fine!)

Note that we only show these single-note riffs in the intro section. If you mastered them there, you'll have no problem adding them into the other two places they go, without needing to read them.

If you're a Los Lobos fan, here's your chance to learn one of their classic early songs. And if you're not (yet), well, we can't recommend them highly enough - ENJOY!
