In Istanbul, the latest verbal volley aimed at protesters in Taksim Square by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not go down well.

Surrounded by barricades and expecting a police assault at any time, the demonstrators appeared as determined as ever to stay - and for the government to take their demands seriously.

A few were even more radical. One protester said: "The Prime Minister says the answer must be given at the ballot box, but that would only justify what they're doing right now. The real deal is to break down the ballot box, boycott he elections and stay on the streets."

Another activist said: "I want these protests to continue until the elections."
