Prodotto da Dodicilune, distribuito in Italia e all’estero da IRD e nei principali store online da BELIEVE DIGITAL, mercoledì 29 ottobre 2025 esce “Dark Sides“, nuovo CD, nuovo progetto artistico e nuova band del sassofonista, compositore e didatta pugliese Roberto Ottaviano, artista di punta e tra i più longevi della intera scuderia Dodicilune, qui impegnato al sax soprano e al clarinetto. Al suo fianco Peppe Frana (oud), Luca ‘DJ Rocca’ Roccatagliati (elettroniche, loops, sampling), Giorgio Vendola (contrabbasso, elettroniche), Ermanno Baron (batteria e percussioni).
“Dark Sides” è al tempo stesso una band e un progetto discografico che mi proietta in una dimensione nuova: un viaggio tra suoni acustici di altre latitudini, come quelli dell’oud, e suggestioni elettroniche generate da sampler, loop e processori. Un racconto emotivo che prende forma attraverso composizioni originali, l’improvvisazione libera e brani accuratamente selezionati da fonti diverse: le Dark Sides del mondo contemporaneo. Il lato oscuro dell’umanità si manifesta in molteplici forme - dalle atrocità dei genocidi alle sofisticate manipolazioni finanziarie delle grandi holding. Eventi distanti per modalità, ma uniti da un filo conduttore comune: il potere, l’avidità e la volontà di sopraffazione. In questo contesto, la musica diventa un atto di resistenza e consapevolezza per sfuggire alla tentazione di autoriferirsi a sè stessa. Gabriel’s Message, si ispira al canto natalizio basco “Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen”, evocando l’Annunciazione con toni delicati e spirituali. Bridal Ballad, composto da Jocelyn Pook per l’adattamento Shakespeariano de Il Mercante di Venezia, trasmette un’inquietudine sottile che si insinua nella bellezza. Syte, con le sue radici balcaniche, è un brano viscerale, teso tra ritmo e malinconia. Goin’ Home, tratto dalla Sinfonia “Dal Nuovo Mondo” di Dvořák, richiama il bisogno di un ritorno, fisico o interiore, verso un altrove perduto. Questi brani, insieme ai miei originali, all’improvvisazione e alla ricerca sonora, sono testimonianze. Ogni nota è un gesto che cerca di restituire umanità, memoria e senso critico in un tempo che troppo spesso li smarrisce.

Produced by Dodicilune, distributed in Italy and abroad by IRD and in major online stores by BELIEVE DIGITAL, Wednesday 29 October 2025 sees the release of “Dark Sides”, a new CD, new artistic project and new band from Apulian saxophonist, composer and teacher Roberto Ottaviano, a leading artist and one of the longest-standing members of the Dodicilune stable, here playing soprano saxophone and clarinet. He is accompanied by Peppe Frana (oud), Luca “DJ Rocca” Roccatagliati (electronics, loops, sampling), Giorgio Vendola (double bass, electronics) and Ermanno Baron (drums and percussion).
“Dark Sides” is both a band and a recording project that places me in a new dimension: a journey through acoustic sounds from other latitudes, such as those of the oud, and electronic suggestions generated by samplers, loops and processors. An emotional story that takes shape through original compositions, free improvisation and carefully selected songs from different sources: the Dark Sides of the contemporary world. The dark side of humanity manifests itself in many forms — from the atrocities of genocide to the sophisticated financial manipulations of large holding companies. Events distant in modality, but united by a common thread: power, greed and the will to dominate. In this context, music becomes an act of resistance and awareness to escape the temptation to refer to itself. Gabriel’s Message, is inspired by the Basque Christmas carol “Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen”, evoking the Annunciation with delicate and spiritual tones. Bridal Ballad, composed by Jocelyn Pook for Shakespeare’s adaptation of “The Merchant of Venice”, conveys a subtle uneasiness that creeps into beauty. Syte, with its Balkan roots, is a visceral piece, tense between rhythm and melancholy. Goin’ Home, taken from Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, recalls the need for a return, physical or interior, to a lost elsewhere. These pieces, together with my originals, improvisation and sound research, are testimonies. Each note is a gesture that seeks to restore humanity, memory and critical sense in a time that too often loses them."
