香港電影資料館―《新蜀山劍俠》（1983）修復故事 HKFA – Restoration Story of ‘Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain’ (1983)

由徐克導演的《新蜀山劍俠》（1983）牽涉大量仙俠奇幻元素，在當時電腦特技尚未大行其道的環境下，拍攝極具難度。製作團隊特別請來荷里活特技專家助陣，結合本地創新土法特效，將導演天馬行空的想像化成一幕幕氣勢磅礴、色彩瑰麗的影像，驚艷影壇。

2023年，正值影片上映40周年，香港電影資料館以該片的香港版原底片、聲片及字幕片為基礎，開展了影片的4K數碼修復工作。影片的原菲林素材經檢查後有逾千個駁口，修復團隊需逐一修補駁口及損壞的齒孔，工作包括大量畫面調色、去除斑點及花痕、減低影像抖動及晃動、聲音背景降噪及重置字幕等，務求盡量還原影片當年公映的面貌。

承蒙星空華文傳媒有限公司提供《新蜀山劍俠》的菲林素材，並授權資料館進行數碼修復，讓這部經典電影得以4K修復面貌重現銀幕。第二屆香港流行文化節節目之一「武影江湖──香港電影武林盛會」，於2024年3月27日，在香港文化中心大劇院舉行《新蜀山劍俠》4K數碼修復版首映，為放映節目揭開序幕。

去年康文署主辦第一屆香港流行文化節，大受歡迎。今年第二屆以「也文也武」為主題，帶領大家穿梭古今，縱橫文武，展示香港流行文化如何傳承、流轉、融和、突破。節目包括專題展覽、電影放映、舞台節目及外展活動，內容涵蓋文學、各式藝術以至武術，全方位呈現香港活潑多元的流行文化如何能文能武。如欲了解更多，請瀏覽www.pcf.gov.hk/tc。

Tsui Hark's ‘Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain’ (1983) involves numerous fantasy and magical elements with immortal and mysterious characters. In an era before computer-generated special effects, the filming process itself was not an easy one. With the support of special effects experts from Hollywood, and working together with innovative effects pioneered locally, the result was a kaleidoscopic, visually stunning rendition of Tsui's unbridled imagination.

In 2023, in celebration of the film's 40th anniversary, the Hong Kong Film Archive began a 4K digital restoration project based on the film negatives, soundtrack, and the subtitles film of the film's Hong Kong version. Upon inspection, we found over 1,000 splices in the original negatives, and the conservation team had to repair the splices and damaged perforations in the film strips. The restoration work involved extensive colour grading, removal of spots and scratches, as well as image stabilisation to reduce the image jitters and flickers; we also reduced the background noises in the soundtrack and remade the subtitles. Our ultimate goal was to restore the film as close as possible to the original look at the time of its general release.

We wish to extend our thanks to Fortune Star Media Limited for providing film material of ‘Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain’, and for authorising the Archive's 4K restoration, thus enabling us to bring this fantasy martial arts epic back to the big screen in the best possible condition. The premiere screening of the 4K digitally restored version of ‘Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain’ was held at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 27 March 2024, to inaugurate 'Of Fists and Swords: Kaleidoscope of Hong Kong Martial Arts Films', one of the programmes presented at the second Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) presented the first Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival last year to great acclaim. This year, the second edition features ‘Arts & Action’ as its theme, taking audiences on a journey through time to explore the charm of Hong Kong's pop culture. It encompasses both ‘Arts’ (creative works) and ‘Action’ (martial arts), an attempt to show the dynamic inheritance, diffusion, integration and breakthroughs within Hong Kong's pop culture.
