Another audio perfect version of this video    • Out of Town - A Lament..  

The mid 1960s marked the end of the steam train age, then it was all change at Wolverhampton's 'Low Level Railway Station'. Some services were still running in the early 1970s as seen in this video but it closed to passengers in 1972. After this it was used as a parcels depot until 1981. The late 19th century building remains in what was regarded as an 'Heritage Zone', but so much of the surroundings have changed. But not so the grandly arched and tiled Victorian subway linking the Low Level station to the High Level station seen at the end of this video.
The clip of footage dating back from 1965 to the mid 1950s is commercially available and I hope I have not offended any one for using it (please contact me for details of this great video collection).
The original sound-track has been almost entirely dubbed over by a smooth and funky jazz vibe in which the voice-over almost becomes part of the music track. This gives added subjective value, creating a bygone atmosphere with contemporary jazz music. The characteristic sounds of steam and rail blending in seem to complete a more impressionist type of picture for the purpose of this video.
The images are from the Wolverhampton 'Grand Junction' area centred on the Low Level station, going out to Oxley and Cosford, west to Norton Junction and the West Coast Main Line, south to Walsall, Birmingham Snow Hill and Stourbridge. - WE are effectively saying goodbye to the steam trains.......and this is mainly what the video is about.
