Small Pratincole is only 16.5-18.5 cm in length, with a 42–48 cm wingspan. Because of its small size, the small pratincole can be briefly confused in flight with swifts or swallows. This bird has short legs, long pointed wings and a short tail. Its short bill is an adaptation to aerial feeding i.e. insects taken on wing. Having Brown forehead, wings are grey above with black primaries and black and white bars at the rear edge of the inner flight feathers. The under wings are mainly black. The tail is white with a black terminal triangle. The belly is white. It is found in small flocks or large lose concentration near riversides, sandbars, marshy expanses, coastal swamps e.g. Sunderbans.
Sexes alike, both sexes incubate and tend the young; during breeding has black stripe from eye to beak. It breeds from February to April on gravel or sand banks near rivers and lakes. Breeding areas include small areas in northern Karnataka and northern Kerala. It has a soft, but harsh call notes in flight like tuck-tuck-tuck, a soft tiririt- tiririt- tiririt.
