Assam-Meghalaya border witnessed fresh unrest on Monday, August 18 after clashes broke out between residents of both states near Basistha, on the outskirts of Guwahati.

According to local sources, the confrontation was triggered when a group of people from Meghalaya allegedly attempted to uproot an electric pole recently installed by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in the disputed stretch. The move drew sharp objections from residents on the Assam side, leading to a heated war of words that soon escalated into a violent scuffle.
Witnesses alleged that in the midst of the chaos, a woman from Assam was assaulted by individuals from the Meghalaya side, sparking widespread outrage among locals. Men and women from both sides then engaged in a physical confrontation, with panic gripping the area as the situation spiralled out of control.

Authorities were forced to intervene swiftly. Police personnel from both Assam & Meghalaya were rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control after tense moments. Since then, security forces have been maintaining strict vigil along the sensitive stretch to prevent further escalation.

A source in the administration confirmed that both state governments have instructed their local teams not to carry out unilateral activities in the disputed area until a settlement is reached through dialogue. “The matter is sensitive. Both sides have been instructed not to undertake any activities that may inflame tensions until higher-level talks resolve the issue,” the source said.

The APDCL, meanwhile, maintained that its work in the disputed stretch was legitimate as the residents are registered power consumers under the company. Speaking to GPlus, a source from APDCL said, “The power consumers in that village are registered with us and to improve the power scenario as they get less voltage we were installing poles and transformer. The poles which were erected will remain but to complete the work we will require administration help.”
