STORYLINE
Mexico's Supreme Court ordered the release of 20 men convicted in the 1997 massacre of 45 Indian villagers in southern Chiapas state, ruling on Wednesday that federal prosecutors had used illegally obtained evidence.
Six others serving prison sentences for the massacre at the village of Acteal will continue to be held, but will be given new trials.
"During the investigation, their constitutional rights were violated," the court said in a statement.
"The majority of cases ... were based on the use of illegally obtained evidence."
More than three dozen people, most also Indians, have been convicted in the case, and the remainder will continue to serve their sentences.
The court ruled that the illegally obtained evidence had to be thrown out.
Protesters against the ruling, many of them indigenous Indians, gathered outside the court with banners, crosses and pictures of those killed.
"What they are doing is helping the criminals, today they are giving freedom to those responsible for the Acteal massacre," said Sebastian Perez, from Las Abejas, a non-governmental organisation.
On December 22, 1997, paramilitaries with alleged ties to government figures attacked a prayer meeting of Roman Catholic activists who sympathised with the Zapatista rebels in Acteal, Chiapas.
Over several hours, the assailants killed 45 people, including children as young as 2 months old.
Justice in the case has been slow.
