1983 was a dazzling year at the top of the UK charts, with a kaleidoscope of sounds reaching number one. The year began with Phil Collins’ heartfelt “You Can’t Hurry Love,” nodding to Motown’s golden age, and soon saw Kajagoogoo’s “Too Shy” epitomising glossy synth-pop.

Musical theatre crossed over as “Only You” by the Flying Pickets brought a cappella to Christmas number one. Between them, classics like David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” and Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” lit up the charts.

Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon” was the highest selling single of the year. Together, these songs made 1983 a bold, colourful year of UK chart-toppers.
