What are A levels?

A Levels, short for Advanced Level qualifications, are a set of subject-specific exams taken by students in the United Kingdom typically between the ages of 16 and 18. They are roughly equivalent to the final two years of high school in the United States and are a critical part of the education system for students planning to enter university.

Here are some key points to help Americans understand A Levels:

1. Academic Focus: Students usually select 3 to 4 subjects to study intensively over two years. These subjects are chosen based on the student’s interests and career aspirations.

2. Depth of Study: A Levels are more specialised than the broad curriculum of U.S. high school diplomas. Students delve deeply into their chosen subjects, similar to college-level courses in the U.S.

3. University Admission: A Level results are crucial for university admission in the UK. Universities make offers based on predicted A Level grades, and final admission depends on achieving the required grades.

4. Examinations: At the end of the two-year period, students take standardised exams in their chosen subjects. These exams are graded from A* (the highest) to E.

5. Alternative to AP/IB: In the U.S., Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses offer a somewhat similar experience, providing college-level coursework and exams to high school students.

In summary, A Levels are an intensive and specialised academic program that prepares UK students for higher education, similar to a combination of the last two years of high school and some college-level coursework in the U.S.
