Saw Retrospective: A Wildly Successful Yet Misunderstood Franchise

The Saw series was a bit of a phenomenon when it came to the horror genre of the early 2000’s. Each film brought with it an epic amount in the box office as compared to their respective low-budget’s from year to year and each year Saw dominated the month of Halloween. From 2004 to 2010 a film was released annually without fail and in the past few it’s been making a comeback with 2017’s Jigsaw and 2021’s upcoming Spiral… A… spinoff…? To the series? And as a big fan of every entry I thought I’d put in my efforts into covering them in the lead up to the release of Spiral… Now, I kind of screwed that up if I’m being honest and only ended up having the time to edit this first part of my planned Saw Retrospective series before the new film but that’s ok! So this is that; Part 1 of my Saw Retrospective series, and here I talk all about the wild success of the series in which it conquered the genre and pioneered the idea of the modern “torture porn” film – Though I’m not a fan of that term, and believe it to be extremely inaccurate regarding these films… And that’s what the second half of this video is all about as I get into the misunderstanding of the series and Saw’s ultimate false reputation as being all about blood and gore when really underneath there is so much more and the films are way smarter than they get credit for. I’m a Saw fan and here I am in this video to defend it!
