Libertarians and conservatives often find common ground in their advocacy for individual freedom, limited government, and free markets. This alignment can sometimes make it difficult to distinguish between the two philosophies, and some advocates even view a partnership between libertarians and conservatives as both natural and strategically beneficial.

However, the distinctions between libertarianism and conservatism are significant and impact various policy areas. In fields such as national security, foreign policy, immigration, criminal justice, drug policy, surveillance, family issues, and the role of religion in government, libertarians and conservatives frequently have divergent views.
