Описание к видео Earth Layers - Explained

If you could hold the Earth in your hand and slice it in half, you'd see that there are different layers to it. Our planet is composed of four distinct layers: Crust, Mantle, Core and Inner core. Let's understand each layer starting from the very center of our planet, the Inner Core.

Inner Core
The inner core is extremely dense, mostly made up of iron and nickel. It spins a bit faster than the rest of the planet. It’s also extremely hot, with a temperature of 5,400° Celsius; almost as hot as the surface of the sun. Pressures here are immense; over 3 million times greater than on Earth’s surface.

The outer core
Just like inner core, outer core is also made up of Iron and Nickel. The only difference is that it's in liquid form. Radioactive decay from the elements such as uranium and thorium keeps it in liquid form. Just like inner core, the outer core spins faster than the entire Earth. That motion generates electrical currents, which, in turn, generate Earth’s magnetic field and protects us from the harmful radiations from the space. Scientists are still trying to understand how all that happens.

Mantle
Mantle is the Earth’s thickest layer, making up 84% of the Earth's volume. It's mostly made up of iron, magnesium and silicon; it is dense, hot and semi-solid. Temperatures here range from 500 to 900 degrees Celsius in the upper portion to over 4,000 degrees Celsius near the outer core boundary. Diamonds that we like to possess are made in the mantle. Most of the diamonds are formed at the depths of above 200 kms. These crystals are then brought to the surface in volcanic activities.

The Crust
Earth’s crust is where we all live. It's like the shell of an egg. It is extremely thin, cold and brittle compared to what lies below it. The crust is made of relatively lighter elements such as silica and aluminum. The thickness of crust varies largely. It may be 5 kms on the ocean floor and over 50 kms on the continents.
