Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 – 1859) was an exceptional British engineer, who succeeded in distinguishing himself even in an era of engineering giants.
He was the son of Marc Isambard Brunel, a French engineer who left France at the time of the French Revolution, and his English wife, Sophia Kingdom.
Britain was then at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. The 19th century was characterised by titanic industrial endeavours, whereby engineers were literally forging an entirely new world from scratch.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the giants of the engineering profession in Britain. He was a workaholic, obsessed by innovation and performance. The projects he carried out were cyclopean, mostly cutting–edge, and their sheer number, and the amount of work involved, is absolutely staggering. Amazingly, many of them can be admired today, as they are still in operation, even after more than 150 years.
