The Catawissa railroads Shuman tunnel.

Описание к видео The Catawissa railroads Shuman tunnel.

Hello everyone. This is the Shuman tunnel.
Originally chartered in 1831, the Susquehanna and Little Schuylkill railroad was an early railroad in Pennsylvania. It ran from Tamanend junction in Schuylkill County to Milton PA along the Susquehanna River. It juctioned with the Little Schuylkill railroad which ran from Tamaqu PA to Port Clinton PA.
Construction began in 1835 but was halted in 1837 due to a financial panic. No further construction was done for years until the railroad reorganized as the Catawissa, Williamsport, and Erie railroad in 1849. Construction resumed in 1850 and was completed to Milton PA by 1854.
This tunnel was most likely completed in 1853-1854 and reworked twice by the Reading company in 1915 and again in 1929. This tunnel is in Columbia County PA and is close to state game lands 58. Thank you for watching. 9/3/24
