প্রশাসনের প্রাণকেন্দ্র সচিবালয়ে গভীর রাতে লাগা ভয়াবহ আগুনে ব্যাপক ক্ষয়ক্ষতি হয়েছে। সচিবালয়ের ৭ নম্বর ভবনে লাগা আগুন প্রায় সাড়ে ছয় ঘণ্টার পর নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনে ফায়ার সার্ভিস। ওই ভবনটিতে ডাক-টেলিযোগাযোগ ও তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি মন্ত্রণালয়, অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়ের অভ্যন্তরীণ সম্পদ বিভাগ, স্থানীয় সরকার, পল্লী উন্নয়ন ও সমবায় মন্ত্রণালয়, যুব ও ক্রীড়া মন্ত্রণালয়, শ্রম ও কর্মসংস্থান মন্ত্রণালয়, সড়ক পরিবহন ও সেতু মন্ত্রণালয়ের সড়ক পরিবহন ও মহাসড়ক বিভাগ অবস্থিত।

আগুনের ঘটনা সরকারকে ব্যর্থ করার ষড়যন্ত্র বলে জানিয়েছেন স্থানীয় সরকার, পল্লী উন্নয়ন ও সমবায় উপদেষ্টা আসিফ মাহমুদ। আগুনে পোড়া সাত নম্বর ভবনেই তার মন্ত্রণালয়। ফেসবুকে আসিফ লিখেছেন, "মন্ত্রণালয়ের বিগত সময়ে হওয়া অর্থলোপাট, দুর্নীতি নিয়ে আমরা কাজ করছিলাম। কয়েক হাজার কোটি টাকা লুটপাটের প্রমাণও পাওয়া গিয়েছিল।"

সচিবালয় বাংলাদেশ সরকারের প্রশাসনিক সদর দপ্তর। সরকারের সকল নির্বাহী বিভাগীয় কাজ সচিবালয়ে সম্পন্ন হয়। রাজধানী ঢাকার সেগুন বাগিচায় ১৯৪৭ সালে নির্মিত একগুচ্ছ ভবন নিয়ে সচিবালয় গঠিত হয়, যা ১৯৭১ সাল পর্যন্ত পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের প্রাদেশিক সরকারের সচিবালয় হিসেবে কার্যরত ছিল।
