The confrontation unfolded on April 2, 2025, when police responded to a call regarding a disturbance near the 100 block of Retta Esplanade at the Laishley Boat Ramp.
According to the official police report, the victim was navigating a vessel under the Barron Collier Bridge when another boat approached at high speed, nearly causing a crash. The suspect, a local charter captain, was allegedly intoxicated and began shouting profanities and threats, accusing the victim of fishing in "his waters."
Video evidence, recorded without consent, allegedly shows the suspect jumping aboard the victim’s vessel, grabbing the victim, and demanding an apology. The suspect reportedly stated, “You’re lucky I didn’t [expletive] you both up,” while taunting the victim and referencing violent retribution. The altercation was recorded by another passenger, and that footage later circulated on social media and was submitted to police.
Officers collected additional statements, conducted interviews, and verified details with body-worn camera footage. A forensic review of video clips supported the victim’s account, aligning with other witness testimony. The suspect was later identified through a photo lineup and arrested.
Authorities charged the suspect with Burglary with Assault or Battery under Florida Statute §810.02(2)(a). The charge stems from the unauthorized boarding of another vessel with intent to commit battery.
Following the arrest, police continued the investigation, interviewing others who had been aboard either vessel or were familiar with the individuals involved. The incident remains a cautionary tale about maritime confrontations, alcohol use, and accountability on Florida's waterways.
