Extreme Pursuit has uncovered the world's ninth lava lake on one of the most remote and inaccessible islands. For some time, grainy satellite images hinted at a persistent body of lava on the volcanic island of Tofua (Tonga), but the only way to know for sure was to see it ourselves. So that's exactly what we did.

It involved years of planning and was a logistical nightmare. Just finding a boat and skipper mad enough to take us took forever. The landing was sketchy as hell, the jungle was basically impenetrable and crawling with all kinds of nasty stuff. We hauled hundreds of kilos of equipment and finally reached the summit after two brutal days. Getting close to the active cone, we walked through thousands of fresh lava projectiles - some still hot. It was extremely dangerous and no one was coming to rescue us if we got into trouble.

When the thick toxic gases cleared for a moment, there it was - a churning, glowing lake of molten rock way down in the crater - about the size of a tennis court.

Tofua is an active volcanic island located in the Haʻapai group of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean. It features a large caldera with a crater lake at its center, formed by powerful past eruptions.
