Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed that police are investigating the merits of a case opened in connection with the ANC's 16th Regional Conference.
A fraud case was opened last week following a raid at the private residence of a service provider, where ballot papers allegedly linked to the conference that elected the Johannesburg leadership were discovered. The recovery of the ballot papers and the subsequent investigation into alleged election fraud, conflict of interest and the improper handling of ballot boxes have reportedly deepened divisions within the ANC in Johannesburg. These internal divisions have now spilled over into the Johannesburg City Council, where minority parties are seeking to use a secret ballot to remove Mayor Dada Morero.
