Replanting the Birthing Trees

Effective community-led strategies to transform intergenerational cycles of trauma to cycles of nurturing, recovery and improved wellbeing for First Nations parents and babies are urgently needed to lay fundamental foundations for Closing the Gap. Replanting the Birthing Trees is a recently funded MRFF project which aims to combine First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing with rigorous prior First Nations-led participatory co-design, research and practice evidence (Garma) to implement and evaluate community-led, holistic, trans-disciplinary, continuity-of-care for the first 2000 days with seven perinatal services in two jurisdictions (Western Australia (WA) and Victoria), and concurrently build infrastructure for scale-up.

In this presentation Professor Chamberlain will describe this innovative model represented by the metaphor: governed in alignment with National Agreement reform pillars, grounded in First Nations knowledge and informed by strong clear evidence to build the infrastructure for translation and scale-up:
Leaves: A resource repository for parents, service providers and decision-makers, structured support framework and integration of culturally validated assessment items Branches: Workforce development resources to enable culturally-safe trauma-integrated care:
Sturdy Trunk: A toolkit for implementing culturally-safe, trauma-integrated continuity-of-care,
Strong roots: Supporting Aboriginal Families to Stay Together from the START.

The Birthing on Country Centre for Research Excellence was awarded in 2020 to The Molly Wardaguga Research Centre. The BoC CRE Seminar Series is a key activity for the Centre to share the work, resources, and information with other communities, researchers, students, and service providers about the amazing, innovative work that is happening throughout Australia.
