Full Title: New Basin Modeling Approach for the Georgia State Water Plan, Wei Zeng, Jennifer Welte, and Hailian Liang, Georgia EPD, John Clayton and Megan Rivera, Hazen and Sawyer

Georgia EPD is currently developing new surface water availability models for use in the next round of updates to the State Water Plan. These models, which are termed Basin Environmental Assessment Models, or BEAMs, will simulate flow impairment throughout river basins much as their ResSim-based predecessors and will be used to support resource assessments by Regional Planning Councils in the next update. Unlike their predecessors, BEAMs are being developed using the OASIS platform, allowing faster simulations as well as division of the basin into a larger number of planning nodes (even nodes for individual facilities). As a proof of concept, EPD contracted Hazen and Sawyer in summer 2019 to develop a Pilot BEAM for the Oconee – Ocmulgee – Altamaha (OOA) basin. That model is now complete, and Hazen and EPD are currently developing BEAMs for other basins using lessons learned from the Pilot effort. This presentation will introduce the BEAM framework and its capabilities using the OOA model as a demonstration.
