A playthrough of Sierra Online's 1992 graphic adventure for PCs running Dos, Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel.

The 1992 version of Police Quest is a remake of the 1987 game of the same name (   • Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Ange...  ) running on Sierra's shiny new SCI engine.

The text parser has been replaced by an icon-driven point-and-click interface, the script has been rewritten and expanded, the driving controls have been simplified, and the presentation has been completely overhauled: the digitized VGA graphics and the FM/MIDI soundtrack bring it roughly in line with Police Quest III (   • Police Quest III: The Kindred (PC) Playthr...  ).

The story has been updated to better reflect the connections between PQ1 and its sequels, and the puzzles have seen a few alterations to better accommodate the new controls, but the remake largely remains faithful to the original experience. It still feels like an older and simpler game than PQ3, but the improvements do a nice job of smoothing over the rough spots. For anyone who found themselves put off by then-archaic design of the original, this would've been an ideal way to get caught up on the Sonny Bonds saga.

It's also a good way to gauge how quickly the tech behind games was growing in the late 80s/early 90s. Just five years had passed between the release of the original and the remake, and the difference is night and day. This was exciting stuff!
