Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Shikwa by Dr. Muhammad Allama Iqbal
(The Complaint)

Words like these became an issue of blasphemy when Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal wrote what is said to be one of the best pieces of his poetry today. Sir Muhammad Iqbal who was also known as Allama Iqbal was a successful famous poet, philosopher, lawyer, and politician from British India. Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot at the time known British India to couple names Sheikh Noor Muhammad and Imam Bibi. In 1895, Iqbal enrolled himself in Government College Lahore for his bachelors’ where he keenly studied philosophy, English literature, and Arabic. Dr. Iqbal finished his Masters of Arts Degree and started his academic career as an ardent reader of Arabic. He not only became Professor of Philosophy but started publishing phenomenal works like ‘Payam-i-Mashriq, ‘The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, ‘Javid Nama, ‘Pas Cheh Bayed Kard ai Aqwam-e-Sharq, ‘Bal-i-Jibril, and many more and within no time Dr. Iqbal became the poet of the East and one of the best of all times to walk this Earth.
In 1909, Allama Muhammad Iqbal recited ‘Shikwa’ (‘The Complaint’) in Lahore, at a small gathering of Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam. Shikwa is Iqbal’s complaint to God about the downfall of Muslims and the oppression faced by them. Shikwa came into existence at a very sensitive time, when Muslims in India had nearly lost their identity. One of the apparent themes In Shikwa, is where Iqbal complains about the fact that non-Muslims enjoy the bounties of Allah while Muslims suffer all over the world. The writing perhaps was beyond the understanding of novice brains but the importance of Shikwa and realization of it being the masterpiece came when Dr. Iqbal wrote the answer to “The Complaint” known as Jawab e Shikwa (Answer to the Complaint). Jawab-e-Shikwa is an answer to the complaint, where Iqbal beautifully uses his lyrical expression to explain how Allah would have responded.
The poem ‘Shikwa” has so many complain being addressed to Allah Almighty. Iqbal starts with complaint one that suggests that if it wasn’t for us nobody would have spread God’s name and the message like a flame. Further, Iqbal’s wording of the poem is so intriguing for instance, he mentions rather questions that who would have saved God’s name, we are the one who fought for him when we could have been the one sitting in ease in barren lands and raging seas. Iqbal questions God saying that he (God) complains we are not loyal but where is God’s love for us in return?
I personally believe that Dr. Iqbal was also incorporating the current events of the time into his poetry and I know this due to the evidence form the poetry, he questions God that why his favor swings to our foes which I assume foes of the time when this piece was written. In essence, Dr. Iqbal followed a pattern in this poem in which the first four lines mention what we as Muslims have done for Allah and then the last two lines are complaining to Allah, that why he does not react and why does his favors do not favor us but our foes. Needless to say, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal got huge back lash form the religious community and our so called mullahs, but eventually this faded when Iqbal wrote a sequel response to his “The complaint” and all the blasphemist accusations turned into poetry marvel.
