You didn't think you'd see a steam train, did you? A British Railways L.M.S. 2-6-0 Class 2MT (No. 46512) is seen in this video both at the start and end of its round trip between Aviemore and Broomhill along the 10-mile-long Strathspey Railway - a preservation line in the heart of Scotland's Cairngorms National Park starting and ending at the bustling upmarket tourist hub of Aviemore. It can be seen travelling 'boiler-first' on its outbound trip, and working quite hard too, and then it can be seen travelling 'tender-first' back to Aviemore with a rake of well-preserved Mk.1 carriages. The trains can get incredibly crowded, but it's good to see a heritage railway doing so well, and the vistas from the train are stunning. Rather uniquely, the locomotive runs around before terminating at Broomhill with the passing loop beyond the station there.

Due to an incident in 2022, barriers had to be installed at this level crossing that year as the level crossing was previously un-gated. What took its place was a completely mainline-standard level crossing, and you would be forgiven for not thinking there was a heritage railway here at all - a lot of people without the interest or knowledge won't ever see a lot more of the railway than this level crossing. It feels more like a freight branch as a result, and whilst barriers had to be added in some form, the authenticity and 'heritage' feel really didn't need to go completely. Even the fencing around it leaves no hint to the fact that it's a preservation line, and the Newgate barrier cages are almost an insult in that matter. It's an uncomfortable, dissonant contrast which I personally really am not a fan of, but it still does the job and the crossing is slightly more fool-proofed and quite a bit safer as a result - trains can even go faster sooner as they don't have to slow down in normal practice!
