John Agard, the Guyanese-born British playwright and poet, discusses ‘Windrush’, the ship that in 1948 brought over 1,000 people from the Caribbean to Britain in search of (and under the promise of) prosperity, and would subsequently lend its name to the thousands more who followed them over the subsequent decade and a half.

Agard describes the experiences of two passengers on that inaugural journey, and how their stories inspired him to write the poem ‘Windrush Child’, presented here through the beautiful colourful illustrations of Sophie Bass.

In conclusion Agard highlights the importance of understanding that ‘the Black thread within the British fabric’ did not begin with the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury, but had been present long before.
