The tips in this video may be a little unexpected. I realise that there are many books and articles out there which may teach you the best practices when it comes to presenting yourself at the Open Day of cabin crew recruitment, but after many conversations with a number of applicants and current flight attendants, I realised that there were a few cues which these articles hadn’t addressed with great insight.

I know what it’s like to build a resumé. Heck, I’ve built over 50 unique resumés during my time as a career seeker. And every time I customised my document, I’d mull over its contents with great attention to detail, thinking at each and every word had an impact on my success. But now, looking at it from an Eagle eye perspective, I realise that the resume only plays one part of the puzzle. It’s there to summarise you and your credentials and to give employers a way assess your criteria before investing more time in you. So yes, it does make a difference. But in the scenario of Open Days and “CV Drops” as they call them, you your chance to submit your resumé occurs on the same day that you get to meet the recruiters face-to-face. Here, you have leverage. The leverage is this: that you get to make a positive impact with your actions, your demeanour and behaviour to fire up the contents of your CV. THIS is the true opportunity. This video is aimed to focus on that which is the true opportunity: to create a powerful first impression.

Before we dive into that though, let’s address the fact that life is a journey. I once heard that in the pursuit of something, give it your all, and then let it go. It’s been the mantra of my life and my approach to every single thing which I pursue. I give it my best, and then where the rest is out of my control, I let it be. Timing is everything. Journey is everything.

But for now, my goal is to give you some tips on how to truly give it your best by first creating a powerful first impression.

In this context of applying for a job, people like people who like people. Haha. It sounds funny, but it’s true. Remember that the cabin crew job is one in which you are constantly surrounded by people, and your role is to be hospitable (of course, alongside tending to safety and security measures). Let’s imagine that your open day is really an opportunity to see how you integrate into an environment filled with people. Yes, it’s an opportunity for you to submit your resume, but more so, it’s an opportunity for the recruiters to see their applicants en masse. Leave them a lasting impression by treating them well. Listen to their questions actively and respond with personality. Soft skills like confidence, active listening, charm stand out. The moment that I learn how to describe behaviours related to these traits, I’ll be sure to pass them on, but for now, treat your recruiters as if they are your guests. Perhaps focus on removing them from a pedestal where you might see them as people who hold the keys to your destiny, and start seeing them as humans who just want to have a good day at work. The moment you shift your perspective is the moment that you open your true opportunity to be seen.
