Impostors, crewmates, venting, meetings, beans, electrical, "I have medbay". Among Us has taken the world by storm. First impressions are always "why this game? This looks like a flash game." People can be quick to dismiss it, but there's no denying the following the game has gained in such a short period of time.

Among Us launched in June of 2018 and didn't see widespread popularity until over two years later. Even as late as May of 2020, the game was still only seeing an active player-base on PC of around 1000 people. It wasn't until late August 2020 that the game really started to take off, and now sits at a 24 hour peak of over 250,000 players on PC alone. So where did the idea come from?
"Mafia". Mafia is a game where you and your friends are divided into villagers and mafia, and the villagers have to figure out who the mafia are, meanwhile the mafia are trying to assassinate all the villagers without getting caught. Among Us takes this core gameplay loop and adapts it into a video game. But historically, party games can be difficult to promote and gain such widespread viral fame. Everyone loves Mario Party, but they love it more with friends as it relies on a fun competitive spirit. Everyone loves Jackbox, but it can be difficult to find a lobby, and even if you do, it's still not the same without friends because the game thrives most on your in-jokes and ultimately devolving into lunacy that only you and your friends would find funny. But Among Us doesn't need friends. It's more fun with friends, but even if you're playing solo the game makes it super easy to find a lobby and because the game isn't the least bit serious, it doesn't matter if people are playing to win, or just having fun. Fall Guys has seen similar success with a fairly similar stance on how to develop a party game. However, Fall Guys has waned in popularity recently, yet Among Us continues to grow. In fact, it's more popular than Destiny 2, Apex Legends, and Rocket league combined. Why?
Part of this, is because Among Us makes it easy to take it easy. Games are discrete. You'll never encounter the same player twice if you don't want to, and you can freely change your name and be totally anonymous. There's no win log, you have nothing riding on your victories. It's okay to just enjoy it, because you don't even need to win, to win. Even losing can be a victory. So long as you predicted at least one of the impostors, you get the feeling of satisfaction that you have won, even if you didn't. You get the bragging rights, even if you didn't really earn them. You just need to be a little bit correct and your chances are pretty good.
Among Us makes you feel clever, it makes you feel clever even if you're trying to be stupid. You can falsely claim you saw someone vent and get them ejected and it doesn't matter if they were a crew-mate, because maybe on the fourth false claim you'll actually get the impostor ejected. You were fooling around, but the game still made you feel clever.
Suspense. Amnesia. Alien: Isolation. Outlast. Scary games. What am I talking about. What does Among Us have to do with scary games. Matter of fact, why would a scary game even be popular in the first place. What's so fun about being scared? Well, nothing, but it's not about being scared. It's about the exhilaration and the mystery. The same reasons we enjoy scary movies. I mention this, because Among Us might not be a scary game, but it has the same sense of exhilaration and mystery. Who are the impostors? Why is red following me? Is that person faking tasks?
