किडनी रोगियों में फॉस्फोरस बढ़ने से क्या होता है | High Phosphorus in Kidney Failure | CKD Symptoms
Phosphorus is a naturally occurring element present in many foods like milk, eggs, non-vegetarian items, and vegetables. In healthy individuals, kidneys eliminate excess phosphorus through urine. However, in kidney failure patients, this elimination becomes difficult, leading to phosphorus accumulation in the body. This video by Dr. Puru Dhawan discusses how phosphorus builds up in kidney patients, its complications, and practical ways to manage it.

When phosphorus starts building up in the blood, it can cause serious complications. One major effect is the weakening of bones as phosphorus begins to replace calcium, making bones soft and painful. Another critical impact is on cardiovascular health. Phosphorus deposits in the arteries can block blood flow to the heart, increasing the risk of heart attacks. Common symptoms include pain in the lower back, legs, shoulders, and bones.

Phosphorus binders are medicines that are taken with food. They prevent phosphorus from being absorbed into the blood and help eliminate it through stool. Calcium and vitamin D supplements are also given to ensure bones remain strong and phosphorus doesn't replace calcium. Instead of stopping all phosphorus-rich foods, patients are advised to avoid only those items that are extremely high in phosphorus and non-essential for the body, like milk products and non-veg foods.

Patients are encouraged to adopt a vegetarian diet while being mindful of certain vegetables and fruits. Leafy vegetables and underground vegetables are moderated due to their phosphorus and potassium content. Vegetables like brinjal, carrot, ladyfinger, and onion are considered safe. Fruits that are sour when raw and sweet when ripe are generally acceptable, as long as they are low in acid. Careful selection of food ensures that the patient receives enough strength while avoiding harmful build-up of phosphorus, potassium, or acid.
