In No. 18, Bob Sawyer and Ben Allen accompany Mr. Pickwick to inform Mr. Winkle Senior that his son Nathaniel has been married. We get a revival of the conflict between Eatanswill’s Buffs and Blues. And the Rev Stiggins, after asking for a “little token” of past remembrances, is finally treated to a drink by Tony Weller. We’ll also see a few items from the Rosenbach’s Dickens collections.

Note on the chapter numbers
When the serial was first published, Chapter 28 (“A Good-Humoured Christmas Chapter . . .”) was followed by Chapter 28 (“The Story of the Goblins . . .”). The chapter was just divided into two, but both given the same number. The Table of Contents for the first edition just put a little asterisk next to the Goblins chapter number. The Penguin Classics (2003) lists the two chapters as Ch 28 and Ch 28(ii). However most editions adjust the chapter numbers and the Goblin chapter becomes Ch 29 and so on until the end. This means after Ch 28, the chapter numbers in the original serial are all one behind the chapter numbers in most editions. When in doubt, check the chapter titles.

Join the Rosenbach Museum and Library for a monthly journey through Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was the first serialized novel written by Dickens and was published in 20 monthly parts (2-3 chapters per month) from March 1836-October 1837. Edward G. Pettit and a rotating set of Dickensian cohosts will talk about each serialized part once a month from March 2023-October 2024. You will relive Dickens’ funniest novel just as his first readers did.

The Rosenbach has in its collections the complete serial issues of The Pickwick Papers, a portion of the Pickwick manuscript, as well as many first editions, the earliest surviving literary manuscript, letters, ephemera, and a lock of Charles Dickens’ hair.
